Training
From Moscow to Nantes
Alexandra Gérard studied classical and character dance at the Moscow Choreographic Institute, under Margarita Smirnova, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi. She went on to train in Paris with dancers from the Opéra.
In modern jazz, she trained with Kamel Ouali and Rik Odums, among others. In contemporary, at the Rennes Conservatoire with R. Racovitza, alongside workshops with Gigi Căciuleanu and Carolyn Carlson.
She holds the State Diploma in dance teaching, in the classical technique specialism, with modules in music theory, dance history, anatomy and physiology, and pedagogy.
Career
The stage, then teaching
Admitted to Carolyn Carlson's atelier, Alexandra Gérard went on to dance with several companies, including the CCO Ballets de l'Ouest and Taniets Ballet.
She founded Atelier du Mouvement in 1999 and has led its teaching ever since. She is also artistic director and choreographer of the company Mozaïk Ballet.
Under her direction, the school has earned many prizes at the competitions of the Fédération Française de Danse, in both classical and modern jazz.
Her teaching
"Bringing together classical, jazz and contemporary creates a choreographic expression that should be harmonious, rhythmic, and carry a genuine language of the body."
From this rigour comes a way of teaching: technique is never separated from interpretation, and the stage is part of learning from the very start. Every pupil, whatever their level, is given the chance to dance in front of an audience.
