Dancing as a family: why not join in too?

8 min read

You bring your child to their dance class every week. What if, rather than waiting, you took the chance to dance too?

Time for yourself while your child dances

Many parents spend the hour of the class waiting around. Yet this slot, already set aside in the family schedule, is a golden opportunity: turning it into an adult class means looking after yourself without upending family life. Rather than waiting in the car or scrolling through your phone, you put the time to good use, to move, to breathe, to reconnect with yourself. The slot is already blocked out, so you might as well make it a genuine moment of wellbeing.

Sharing a passion

Dancing while your child dances creates a special bond. You understand better what they are experiencing, you share a vocabulary, you talk about each other's progress. At home, dance becomes a shared topic. And at the end of the year, you can even find yourselves on the same stage at the show at the Théâtre Capellia, where all the pupils dance. Living through the nerves, the rehearsals and the applause together binds a family around a shared memory.

Leading by example

Nothing encourages a child more than a parent who takes the plunge in turn. By daring to start, whatever your level, you pass on a precious message: you can learn at any age, and enjoyment matters more than performance. A child who sees their parent accept not getting everything right first time, persevere and improve, takes away a stronger lesson than any amount of talk. Example is worth more than instruction.

A benefit for the whole family

Dance is a complete sport combined with an artistic practice: it loosens a body often stiffened by desk work, maintains balance and posture, and offers a break away from screens. Practised as a family, it establishes a healthy, joyful habit, where physical activity becomes a shared pleasure rather than a chore. Everyone finds something in it, at their own age and their own pace.

Which dance for parents?

The adult groups welcome all levels, beginners included. Ballet for posture, modern jazz for energy, contemporary for freedom of movement, street jazz for the groove: it is up to each person to find what speaks to them. Nothing obliges you to take the same discipline as your child; the main thing is to choose the one that makes you want to come back. Our find my class tool helps you find your way.

Organising without stress

Ideally, you line up the classes on nearby slots, or even the same evening. As the studio is easy to reach (tram 1 and buses 12 and 87, rue des Perrines, in the Doulon district), the journeys stay simple, even during the week. A single trip for the whole family means time and logistics saved. And once there, everyone joins their own class, before heading home together.

A demanding yet caring setting

Taking the plunge as an adult can feel intimidating; that is only natural. At the Atelier du Mouvement, the teaching of Alexandra Gérard, a state-qualified teacher, combines high standards with care: you make real progress, but without ever feeling judged. The adult groups move forward at their own pace, in a friendly atmosphere where enjoyment comes first. There is no need to have danced as a child: you start from where you are.
