A year of dance, from the new term to the show

9 min read

Signing up for dance means committing to a whole year. Here's how it unfolds, from the discovery of September to the big night of the show.

September: the new term and finding your feet

The year begins gently: you return to, or discover, the studio on rue des Perrines, the teacher, the group. The first few weeks serve to establish your bearings, to wake the body after summer, to lay the technical foundations on which everything else will be built. It is also the ideal time for a trial class: the groups are forming, each person finds a place, and it is not too late to join a discipline. There is no hurry; what matters is starting well.

Autumn: building technique

From September to the autumn half-term break, then up to Christmas, we work on the fundamentals: placement, flexibility, coordination, vocabulary. It is the least spectacular period, but the most important, the one in which the gains that will make the difference later take root. We rehearse the scales of dance, settle the right reflexes, correct patiently. This behind-the-scenes work, quiet but essential, prepares everything that follows: without these foundations, no routine would truly hold together.

The holidays: workshop time

The school holidays are not a simple pause: they offer a chance to go deeper. Our technique workshops (three concentrated hours, in ballet and modern jazz, from age 9 and all levels, for 50 €) let you progress quickly over a single session. A workshop is sometimes worth a whole term: without the break from one week to the next, the body takes things in more deeply. These sessions are also open to pupils from other schools who want to work on a specific point.

Winter: the first choreography

After the festive season, the work turns gradually towards the show. Each group receives its choreography and begins to learn it, piece by piece. You discover the music, the entrances, the first movements across the floor. It is an exciting time: the technical work of the autumn suddenly makes sense, put to the service of a dance with a beginning, a middle and an end. Motivation steps up a notch.

Spring: polishing

The choreography takes shape: we refine the placings, the musicality, the expression. We rehearse, again and again, until the steps become reflexes. Motivation rises as the show draws near. It is also the moment to attend to the details that make the difference on stage: a look, an arm, a smile, the synchronisation of the group. Everyone senses that the big occasion is approaching.

The end of the season: run-throughs and the show

The final weeks are given over to run-throughs: we perform the show from end to end, discover the great stage of the Théâtre Capellia, rehearse the entrances and the changes. Moving from the studio to a real theatre, with its lighting and its wings, changes everything. Then comes the big night, when every pupil, from éveil at age 4 up to the adults, dances before the audience. For at the Atelier du Mouvement, every pupil takes to the stage: no one is left out. It is the culmination of the whole year.

The show, a milestone that helps you grow

Beyond the lovely evening, the show leaves its mark. For a child, facing the nerves and hearing the applause is a lesson in confidence; for an adult, a rare source of pride. Working all year towards a set occasion gives a direction, a meaning, a reason to surpass yourself. It is a tremendous driving force, at any age, and a memory that lingers long after the final curtsey.

And the summer?

After the show, it is time to rest and, for those who wish, to take part in the summer workshops. Then the cycle begins again, a notch higher: you set off from the previous year's gains to go further still. Fancy living this adventure? Enrolment takes place at the start of term, our find my class tool helps you choose, and the first trial class is free, all year round.
