Starting dance as an adult: it is never too late
"I'm too old", "I've no flexibility", "everyone else will have started as a child"... We hear these lines often. They are almost always untrue.
The body learns at every age
You do not make up for twenty years of dance in a few months, that is true. But that is not the point. The adult body progresses remarkably as soon as you give it time: suppleness returns, coordination sharpens, posture changes. Many adult students are surprised by their progress in a single season. Contrary to a stubborn belief, it is not "too late". It is simply another path, with its own rewards.
Putting the false excuses to rest
"I've no flexibility": that is exactly what improves, and it returns faster than you would think. "Everyone else will have started as a child": in the adult groups, most people also begin as adults, and no one judges. "I'm going to make a fool of myself": a beginners' class moves at everyone's pace, not that of a few initiates. We hear these lines often. They are almost always untrue, and above all they stop people from starting.
What dance brings, beyond childhood
Beyond technique, adult dance does you good: it loosens a body often stiffened by desk work, keeps balance and memory sharp, and offers a moment of pleasure away from screens. It is a complete form of exercise coupled with an artistic practice. You gain in tone and suppleness, but also in presence and confidence. Many people leave a class lighter than they arrived, their mind cleared of the rest of the day.
A moment for yourself, every week
Taking up an activity as an adult is not only about moving: it is about giving yourself a regular appointment, a time that is yours alone. The music, the group, the progress of a choreography learned week after week give you a thread, a pleasant sense of direction in a life that is often full. Many adult students describe their class as a much-awaited bubble, a fixed point in the week.
Which discipline to start with as an adult?
It all depends on what you feel like. Ballet for rigour and posture, modern jazz for energy and musicality, contemporary for the relationship to the floor and to improvisation. At the Atelier du Mouvement, the adult groups welcome all levels, beginners included. If you are unsure, the article "Which dance to choose" sets out the differences between disciplines.
Do you need to be in particular shape?
No. We ask for neither flexibility nor a sporting past: the class starts from wherever you are. Comfortable clothes you can move freely in, and the wish to give it a go, are enough. The body adapts gradually, the warm-up prepares each session, and the difficulty is set to suit the group. Dance is in fact a gentle and motivating way to get back into shape, without any harshness.
Taking the plunge
The best way to lift your doubts is still to try, without overthinking it. The first class is free, all year round. Come with comfortable clothes, we will take care of the rest. Book your trial or let find my class guide you.
